Welcome Back And NBA Vibes
SPEAKER_02Welcome, welcome, welcome back to another episode of From My Perspective. I'm your boy Dion coming back to you with another episode. Go ahead and like subscribe while you guys are at it. I'm glad you guys could join us again, but you know, joined by not just one co-host, but two. I gotta uh hand it off to DQ. You know, I'm sure he's still doing a victory lap as his New York Knicks are the 2026 NBA Finals champion. So, DQ, how you doing today? I know you still probably celebrating.
SPEAKER_01I mean, if you since you brought it up, I mean, I wasn't even gonna say nothing, my Knicks survived, but you feel me. I'm I'm good, man. Happy to be back on from my perspective.
SPEAKER_02Hey, glad to have you. It's gonna be an NBA heavy episode. But you guys know I'm joined by the man, the myth the legend himself, Captain Hater Q. How are you doing? I know you're excited about this episode.
SPEAKER_00Man, what it do, what it is. You're another master boy, Mr. Bear. Aka aka say your name up on this. Might not put you to mind. Yeah, you know me. It's NBA time. It's my I I love I love all NBA things. I've I've been looking at the calendar like we got a couple months.
SPEAKER_02Let's go talk about football again. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're excited about football season. But we gotta talk about basketball.
Randle Moved And Giannis Trade
SPEAKER_02Big trades happen. Uh, Julius Randle, he got traded to the Brooklyn Nets. Basically, a salary dump. That's where salary dumps go. They go to the Brooklyn Nets. That's what it's been like for the past couple years. Maybe they'll be good. Who knows? But the big trade that happened, then no by surprise. Everybody knew it was gonna be the Boston Celtics or the Miami Heat, and the Miami Heat won. Miami Heat get Giannis Ante Coopo, and they also get Bobby Portage. Don't forget about Bobby Portage. But the Bucs will receive Tyler Hero, who's from the area, Khalil Warren, Jamie Hawkins Jr. Uh, I ain't even about to butcher that man's name, but uh Kay Kasparis Jaxus. Three first round picks, one pick swap, one second round pick. Let's go ahead and ask you guys who won the trade.
SPEAKER_00Y'all know who won the trade because you got the best player. You get the best player if you won a trade, especially with a trade like that, because there's no equal value to uh losing Giannis. Those first round draft picks, yeah, you got three of them. But they got Giannis and they got them, but they you're not gonna be picking in the top five or top ten, more than likely. Maybe that last pick that they got. Maybe. So obviously Miami won the trade. Now, what does this do for Miami? I mean, they already was a play in team. So what's this make them six of these? Yeah, I don't think it because right now they don't have nothing nothing else on their roster.
SPEAKER_02All right. So as you said, I'm gonna go ahead since you said that. The outlook of Miami's roster right now, Devion Mitchell. Now, Norman Powell, if he re-signs. I believe Giannis, if he you know takes a little bit of a haircut, they can definitely re-sign Norman Powell. That is a big if. And I think they need him because they need some shooting. Because outside of Norman Powell, they ain't got my shooting on the roster. Andrew Wiggins, Giannis, Bam, that bitch looks like this so far. Drew Smith, Pelly Larson, Nikolaiovich, and Bobby Portis. That's their bitch as right now. Obviously, they'll fill it out. But right now, this roster, they better re-sign Norman Powell because ain't no spacing on that roster right now. That's that's ain't none at all.
SPEAKER_00They gotta resign Norman Powell, but here's the thing. Norman Powell, if y'all didn't take a backup, but Norman Powell's not the second pickup. He can go to Detroit because Detroit wanted somebody else we're gonna talk about later, and they were gonna both back the truck up for him. Norman Powell could go up to Detroit and get the bag and be on the team that was number one in the East last year. Okay. During the regular season. So is it worth taking the bank cut just to pay to play with Giannis? I don't know. They have to fill out the rest of this roster. That being said. It gets them out to play here, because Giannis is good enough to get you. Giannis and bail is good enough to get you out to play here. Uh Wiggis do gotta, he got a player, attention. He got to sign. He's gonna sign that because he ain't you know he ain't getting no money nowhere else.
SPEAKER_02Right.
Miami’s Roster Fit And Spacing
SPEAKER_02DQ, I'm gonna give the floor to you. How do you feel about the Miami Heat roster now? You know, they in the Heats. They're not too fond of your New York Knicks. I know you probably not too fond of the Heat, but how how you feeling about the Miami Heat roster?
SPEAKER_01You're right, I'm not too fond of the Heat. And this was this was uh This was an old man move. You feel me? I think Pat Riley might have might have lost a step. Oh I uh bear with me now. You know, Phil Jackson went to the Knicks. I hate I hate to keep bringing it up, but he went to the Knicks and he started doing a little crazy thing. This ain't this ain't crazy, but you gave up. Now I understand they're gonna ask for the pick off the rip. Hey, I'm I'm gonna need that pick. Tyler Hero, okay. Where? Okay. But then you start saying people's names that I ain't even know. Now maybe you gotta make the money matchup. Maybe that's what it was, but just killing your whole killing your whole roster, just hoping people gonna come wanna play with Giannis. People gonna want to come play in Miami.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's not true.
SPEAKER_01I run a strip program.
Bucks Return And The Jalen Brown Angle
SPEAKER_01Remember that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you're not wrong. But I mean they did strip them down to their boxes, but it is Miami, it is Giannis. People, the no state income tax, keep that in mind as well. We'll see. But uh I I I I need to see how the roster feels about like I think they got stripped down to their draws. I personally think I'm surprised we can talk about this now, that the because apparently Jalen Brown was on the table for the Bucks. Kind of surprised they didn't go out to Jalen Brown. I mean, you get a star for a proven star, even though yes, he did it in one year, but he also has a finals MVP on his resume. I'm surprised they didn't want to take him, but Jimmy Hassan, the owner of the Bucks, basically said, I was scared that Jalen Brown would ask for a trade a year later. But I don't know. You am I wrong? Why would y'all want a star? You need somebody to put butts of seats. Jalen Brown can put some butts of seats. Might not put a lot of butts of seats, but he can put buds of seats better than uh Tyler Hero and Khalil War. Am I wrong, Q?
SPEAKER_00I think you're wrong. Okay. I think the local product is gonna put more butts in the seats than Jalen Brown. And everybody knows Jalen Brown, my dog. I'm a fan of Jalen Brown. But I'm kind of gonna be going through this next year. If we trade for Jalen Brown, we're going through this next year. He's gonna go on out because simple fact. Giannis is an MVP caliber player. Jalen Brown's a second, second team all NBA caliber player. You know he's gonna wanna. So it it didn't make the Miami package was better because of the simple fact you don't have another headache coming in. He's gonna be cool with playing in his home close to his hometown. And I think you put but you put butts in seats because of the simple fact. Everybody loves the local hero.
SPEAKER_02Speaking of local heroes, he might not local, but he is staying in town.
Austin Reaves Gets Paid In LA
SPEAKER_02Austin Reeves he signed his little max contract, so you know, less money for the Lakers to re-sign somebody good, I don't know. How you feel about uh Austin Reeves staying and he will make 41.3 million during the 226, 2027 year. So he signed a four-year, 185 million contract. Q DQ, how y'all feel about uh the Lakers keeping Austin Reeves? You know, he can't play defense for real, but hey, he's a hell of an offensive player.
SPEAKER_01Uh Austin Reeves, man. Uh, where else was he gonna go? I think that was the that was his only move to make, but max money, like you couldn't talk him off the ledge like that, like uh, you know, 150, 140. Like, I I get it, Austin Reeves. We got we gotta LeBron's not, I don't think LeBron's staying. I think LeBron's leaving. We gotta get somebody else in here to play with Luca. You know what I'm saying? What if we wanted to get Porzingis? What if we wanted to bring in uh uh I'm just trying to help them out. Look, they they they was they going a different route, obviously.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know if they're gonna have the money for LeBron.
SPEAKER_00Uh before you know they they will still have the money for LeBron because of the way the Austin Reed's contract work, uh, you know, unless LeBron went horse. So basically it's back loaded. No, it ain't it don't count against the count. So they still got $50 million in free agency to go sign whoever they want. They only got kind of like my Amy situation, you only got like eight people on the roster. So you gotta feel like the rest of the roster with that $50 million, but they do have that money. Now LeBron, I don't know, I don't I don't understand how it works anymore. It doesn't count against their $50 million, but LeBron, obviously, LeBron would. LeBron ain't taking no pay cut. Nope. Especially not that he might take a little bit of a pay cut, but not that big of a pay cut. And then Austin Reeves, go ahead, I heard you. But it was gonna be some people that was gonna send him that bread. Detroit had some money to give him. And then Brooklyn had some money to give him. Now, I don't know how it works now. After this was before the random trade, so I'm gonna talk to me 100%. So I know Brooklyn, Brooklyn still got money, and they was gonna send they was gonna send that bread to him. Now, he like I said, he is a he is a cone on defense. Bro can't do nothing. But if Luca go in there and say, I want to play for him, you gotta bring him back. We can have no choice but to bring him back. Because Luca already, Luca made it clear. Him and me, y'all figure out the rest.
SPEAKER_01All right. That's how I'm looking at it. Austin Rees wants to, he wanted to stay there. Where where else could he go? And and he could go get some money, but all money ain't good money.
SPEAKER_02Now you are you are he gotta speaking of Austin Reeves, let's let's talk about uh who he will be making more money than next year in the 2026-2027 season.
Salary Comparisons And Brunson Pay Cut Talk
SPEAKER_02He'll be making more money than Rudy Gobert, who's making 36.5 million. I'm cool with that. I'm cool with that. He'll be making more money than NBA Finals MVP, Jalen Brunson, 37.7 million. Now, Jalen Brunson, he did take a crazy pay cut, more than just a haircut. He took a nice little pay cut. Uh, he'll be making more money than Kyrie Irvin, 39.5 million. He'll be making more money than Lamello Ball, who's making 40.7 million. And he'll also be making more money than Tyrese Maxie, who's also making 40.7 million. And here's the kicker. He will be making more money than the NBA MVP, Shea Gilgest Alexander, who's only making 40.8 million.
SPEAKER_00Okay. But all of those are off rookie extensions, though. Most of them. So, besides Kyrie. So they money is gone. Like Shay's contract stores, I think, is it nature? I think it's the URL. I think Shay's contract. So James LeBron said, can we all be honest here? LeBron's getting some money from somewhere else from their organization. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02If he wasn't before, he definitely is now. Like, he's the king of New York now. He took go anywhere he wants to and get us on free.
SPEAKER_00I don't know how he gets no extra money. I don't know. I'm not saying it's a Kawhi Leonard situation or what he had going on with the clubs. I'm not saying that, but I am saying that. You get what I'm saying? It's no, it's no way he took that big of a faker. Just to keep his daddy as assistant coach? No, I'm not hurting.
SPEAKER_02So maybe uh the money that his dad's getting, he's throwing him some bread. It's possible.
SPEAKER_00I don't know, but like you said, he's making what 37?
unknown30.
SPEAKER_02Is it 37? Yeah, he'll be making, he'll be, he'll be making 37.7 next year. And he's best so that means he was probably making a little bit less last year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02He's getting some money somewhere else from the Knicks. Speaking of people that's getting money, Trey Young, he uh re-signed
Trae Young’s Wizards Max Debate
SPEAKER_02me and Q. We had a conversation about it. I was thinking maybe he might flirt with some other teams he didn't. He's staying right there with the Washington Wizards. Four years, $212 million. Y'all think it was worth it for Trey Young to get four years, $212.
SPEAKER_00He's a proven star. Nah, he's a proven star. He don't even play basketball often enough. Who are we talking about? No, he's he's not. Listen, he gets what's he got like $50 something million dollars a year. You don't play defense like Alfred Reed. At least Also Reed's is power. So you know, listen, the last time you played a full season. Well not a full season, but majority of the games bottled out. Balled out. That was two years ago. It was two years ago, bro. What are we talking about? No, he didn't he didn't deserve the max money. If anybody should have been taking a pay cut, it was Trey Young. I don't understand this just me. Maybe it's Captain Hayden, but it is what it is. The Washington Wizards was negotiating against nobody. Didn't nobody else want to sign Trey Young. Just like they was negotiating with Atlanta for a trade to get Trey Young. Nobody else wanted him. You giving up all of this assets and giving up this money, man. You know what I'm saying? They ain't giving up too much of an assets. They got contracts. But still, there's nobody else wanting him. Yeah, bruv. When he does play, he bows out. Who? But when he does play, it's only one other person who plays who gets paid like that and plays less than you. They on the same damn team. They literally the same damn team. And then, of course, he's gonna want a contract extension too. So you're gonna have to pay him too. So you to max Drake Young. I know everything Davis looking like I know you're gonna max me. Just max him. At least I played defense.
SPEAKER_02I'll be for one thing, I will say the Washington Wizards, they'll be a better team next year, especially if they keep AD, because I know there's some trade talks there on him, but you know, they had the no more pig, they got AJ DePonson. We'll talk a little bit more about that in a second. But I mean, for what they they overcoup some of that money in ticket sales, probably. I'm sure those season tickets start to fly off the shelves. Yeah, because they get AJ.
SPEAKER_00Ain't nobody paying to go see Trey. Because you don't know if he's gonna play or not. Okay, my bad. He played five games once he got traded last year.
SPEAKER_02Good boy. Hey, I'll with you when you're right. Uh DK, you do you have a uh rebuttal? Because I I feel like you you said your your first words was he's a superstar.
SPEAKER_01I'm proven star now for sure. Like 212 is not crazy for Trey Young.
SPEAKER_02Four years, 212 though?
SPEAKER_01Four years? He'll be gone in two years.
SPEAKER_00Who? Who's gonna take that break?
SPEAKER_01Hey, they're gonna figure it out. Hey, I know you look, I know you can't get back-to-back picks, number one picks in in consecutive years. You can get it in in one year, skip a year the next year. Hey, we got Trey Young and some picks. Hey, somebody take it. That pick might turn to the number one pick just to get off of him. Hey, somebody be desperate. Them let look, them Lakers.
SPEAKER_02The Lakers, they wouldn't do that, they got Luca, but that's that's too small.
SPEAKER_01That's too small.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say that's two people that don't play offense. So nah, I think that don't play defense. So I don't know how they're gonna. I don't think that's the thing, bro. I don't think their contract is tradable. Now I get it from the aspect of they got a bunch of people on rookie deals, so they ain't gotta pay nobody else. Besides, I guess Anthony Davis at some point. So they get they got the money, and now the new uh con the way the contract is negotiated, you gotta spend the money. You just can't sit on it. You gotta pay somebody. But you gave him the max that he can earn. You again, nobody wanted him when you got him. You think somebody gonna want him two, three years from now when he got older? Oh, I don't, I just don't see it. I don't, I'm not saying he shouldn't have got paid because he is a proven offensive talent. I'm not knocking that. But the fool, the fool of them?
unknownNah.
SPEAKER_02So we so the play, let's uh slide off the players for a little
Dusty May Jumps To The Mavericks
SPEAKER_02bit. We gotta talk about some kind of uh surprising news. Didn't even hear, you know, usually you hear some rumors about you know coaching changes happening. You know, a couple coaches got some um got some uh new positions. We're gonna talk about uh that Portland coaching job here in a second. That's a disgrace of a damn contract that they gave that man. We'll talk about that. But we need to talk about uh the surprise. The Dallas Mavericks, I don't know how they did it, but they pulled the reigning national champion college head coach of Dusty, uh Dusty May from Michigan to be the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Now, we've had a podcast probably a couple years ago, kind of pre-NIL era. I said, I I don't I went um Dan Hurley, he was interviewing for the Lakers job. I said, I'm not big on college coaches going to the NBA. It's a different game. It almost never works. And it rarely works. I think Brad Stevens worked a little bit, uh Billy Donovan worked a little bit, didn't work for um Rick Patino. It only works sometimes. For the most part, it doesn't work. Now with the NIR, maybe it will work, but you still, you know, you got Dustin Smith. If you don't get somebody, get the reigning national champion in Dusty May. I was shocked. Q, you know, you text me, you said you were shocked, but hey, maybe look for a new challenge. Like you said, he got the national championship, and maybe his goal was to uh coach at the NBA. So I mean I'm gonna give the floor to you. What was your reaction of Dusty May being the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks? And uh, do you approve of that coaching decision?
SPEAKER_00So I didn't know that this was a thing, but listening to Brian Winterhorse them podcast, it's been basically it was between him and Duke. Uh can't that guy's name. Duke's head coach. They were trying to Schneider. When Schneider said that he basically he wasn't interested, they put all they uh all their eggs in the Dusty May basket, which also I didn't know if Steve Curry didn't come back, the Warriors was gonna go after Dusty May. So I guess after he won this national championship, he just was like, okay, cool, I'm ready for the next, I'm ready for the next challenge. Which in a way it makes sense. And then you lost three players in the first round of the draft. So your talent roster's not the same. But in this new NIL world, you could rebuild in the blink of the eye. You could build and have another roster that's going to be that could get you to a final four. Uh I said, I was trying to I ain't gonna hold it. I was surprised because it felt like it came out of nowhere because those college coaches don't work. And if you coming off a championship, you figured that they would stay, but now I do know he got a contract, they offered him a contract extension. I don't think he signed it. So maybe that was maybe that was the nice uh Yeah, no, I was shouting. I don't as far as a good hire, it's a different game. You go from playing 30 to 40 some games to playing 82, you're gonna lose a lot because what does the Mavericks have besides Cooper Flag? Because they know guarantee Kyrie gonna be there.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Uh and uh Andy drafted one of his players, uh Johnson Jr., which, Joe, you gotta know, gotta wonder, gotta know he had an influence on that. To so uh I'm actually surprised. I didn't know. I mean, I did hear that some smoke that uh Duke's head coach Snyder has been, you know, it he's been eyeballed by some NBA teams. Kind of surprised at these college coaches, but I mean I guess more college coaches is probably gonna be making that jump to the NBA since it's basically a pro game now. Uh DQ, what was your thoughts? No, when you I'm sure you got that notification that was shocked just like me, me and Q.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it it surprised still. Um, but then I just went and looked, and I guess I didn't know it was a you know, he was he was a prospect. Or that we were still going to college to get these coaches. I thought, you know, we had moved on from that. I guess, you know, but once you stop hiring, you gotta stop hiring players now, you gotta start hiring somebody else. Um no, uh, what's his name? The Raptors OGM or president.
SPEAKER_02He's the president, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so he he knows something. So hey, I I trust him.
SPEAKER_02He know what he's doing. Uh one more coaching uh conversation before we move on to the NBA draft.
Tiago Splitter Hire And Portland’s Contract Mess
SPEAKER_02Uh the Bulls, they the Bulls uh they uh picked up Tiago Splinter, Portland's head coach, Portland's former interim head coach, which I think was an excellent hire. But who Portland picked up, Michael Nori, we gotta talk about that. But Q, let me get your thoughts on Tiago heading to the uh Bulls.
SPEAKER_00It was a good, it was a smart move by Chicago. It was a dumb move by Portland, but as we're gonna talk about, they continuously make dumb moves. Not really surprising. You know what I'm saying? With the contract, we're gonna get into the contract situation, but to focus on Chicago, I think they needed a fresh store, they needed a new head coach, and Tiago Splitter had proven after the mess that happened up in Portland with the Chauncey Bills situation and going to court, he proved that he was head coach material. And he proved that he could make something out of he can make something out of nothing. So he's going to Chicago, he's gonna it's gonna be a little more work than Portland, because ain't no, you know what I mean, ain't no guarantee player right there, but I'm happy for uh Splitter, Tiago Splitter.
SPEAKER_02Uh me too. I know uh uh but we got we gotta talk about this sad excuse of uh an organization in the Portland Trailblazers. Um golly, uh JB Bickishaff, he actually came out and called out the Portland Trailblazers for this unconventional structure of a contract that they gave uh one of the top assistants in Micah Nori. The contract basically, I don't know the full contract, but it includes an only one year guaranteed with team options on the second and third year of the deal. The contract includes a below market base salary and incentives tied to team success. So basically, it's a BS contract. I don't even know why he signed it. So Q explain to me why this man signed this contract.
SPEAKER_00He wanted to be a head coach, and he he continues to get passed over. He had to do sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do to have success going forward. You might not want to do it, but you might have to do it. He signed a horrible contract, but that's not his fault, that's the organization's fault. That's also the NBA's fault, because what the fact y'all should have had the approval of this contract before it was signed. Y'all don't want you, y'all gonna start devaluing y'all head coaches, it's gonna cause an uproar. I don't still need to be like, hey, don't do that no more. He made one phone call. Don't do that no more. Don't pay him his It's like an NFL contract for a player who you know's gotta come back and prove themselves.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00We're gonna give you this, but we're gonna give you a bunch of incentives that you could get paid from two million all the way to eight million. No, why? You ain't never seen no NBA coach have to go through that. But he wanted his opportunity, so you gotta take it. All right, uh, would you have signed that contract?
SPEAKER_01I I wouldn't have, but I don't think this is a bad as bad as it is they're trying to make it seem. This is a this is a a three-year deal, two team options.
SPEAKER_00Coaches don't get team options.
SPEAKER_01Man, right man obviously if you if you can't afford a coach, this is the best way to do it. They can afford it though.
SPEAKER_02That's not bad, it's not all it's not well, okay.
SPEAKER_01If he if he had he's unproven. If he's bad this first year and we cut him, well, I mean, what's no harm, no foul. He signed it.
SPEAKER_02It protects the organization, I guess. It protects the franchise, I guess. I wouldn't have signed it.
SPEAKER_01I ain't never heard of this man. You feel me?
SPEAKER_02I mean, he uh he's one of the he was the top assistant. You're not gonna hear too much about too many assistants unless there was a former head coach. He was a top rising assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves. I probably mean that's gonna be more culture. I feel like he probably I would have waited. Maybe that gold state job opens up next year.
SPEAKER_00We say that, but if he didn't interview for a bunch of jobs, it's kind of hard to not, and that's your that's your goal is to be a head coach. It's kind of hard not to take the opportunity that was given to you. You gotta basically make something out of he's betting on himself. And we always talk about playoffs who bet on themselves. He's betting on himself. I don't I just think the organization is the problem. You're right.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna keep I'm gonna keep it real. This man ain't good. Every team he left got good afterwards.
SPEAKER_00He's an assistant coach, man. That's not even the firm.
SPEAKER_01He left the Raptors, they got good. He left the Kings, they got good. Denver, Detroit. Now he's with Minnesota. Minnesota's finna get over the hump.
SPEAKER_00All right, we'll see. We'll see. Let me can I circle back
Minnesota Spending Questions And Stars Getting Restless
SPEAKER_00around the time? You mentioned at the top of the podcast, talking about Randall getting tracked too. Yeah. He averaged 20 and 10. Y'all, y'all, speaking of organizations that don't want to spend no money. Minnesota don't want to spend no money at all. That y'all got rid of somebody that averaged 20 and 10.
SPEAKER_02And they they re-signed uh Io.
SPEAKER_00It was like what 20 something 20 million a year, I think. I I'm gonna ask y'all who y'all think is gonna make an uproom first? Jalen Brown or Anthony Ellers because this is telling Anthony Elvis, we're not gonna spend no money. You're gonna make do with what we give you. Jalen Brown, hey, my name been in trade talks for Yachtis for the past month, and people been creating a stir because I said this is my most fun year playing basketball.
SPEAKER_02I feel like Jalen Brown knows eventually he's out the door because Jalen Brown, he get he's he's been he was in trade talks for KD. So I feel like he knows. And then the fact that he proven to not just himself but the world that I can be a number one option, I can carry a team, he's cool. He's what he's he is ready. He's I can play with JT, I can play with my own. I probably prefer to play on my own. I bet I think he feels like it's coming sooner rather than later. I don't think he even is tripping right now. He might even get he might even go uh get traded before the season starts. Maybe the Hawks or somebody hollers at him. Who knows? So I uh And man go hold out I gave him another year before he started making a start because yeah. He he gone home now.
SPEAKER_00He goes home now.
SPEAKER_01Nah, but he won't out right now. We're gonna keep it. We'll see what happens. When my name comes up in the rumors, it's I don't know.
SPEAKER_02We'll
2026 NBA Draft Picks And Rookie Fits
SPEAKER_02see what happens. But the 2026 first round of any man draft happened last night. The first two picks went kind of as expected. AJ DeBonte, Dan Peterson. Uh Cameron Boozer went third to the Grizzlies. Caleb Wilson went fourth. Kinte Waggler went fifth to the Clippers. Shout out to Michael Brown Jr. from Louisville. He went to the Brooklyn Nets. Hopefully they can change their ways around. Darius A. Cuff Jr. He went seventh. Kingston Flemings went eighth. Uh Mores Johnson went ninth to play with his former coach, Nell New Coach. And Brandon Burries went 10th to the Milwaukee Bucks. So that's your top 10. I'll go first. Who do you guys what pick did you like the best? What pick you most interested in, and what player are you most excited to see this upcoming season, especially in the summer league coming up? I'll start with you, DQ.
SPEAKER_01I'm interested to see Boozer for sure. Boozer and McKill, but Boozer won because you know they I think they were making a push to get drafted by Utah. You know, they they got history with the family, and and there was a little talk of, you know, him going there and continuing the legacy. But you know, going to Memphis, it's not a bad, it's not bad. I know they might be coming off a job, but I'd keep him.
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't be too upset about it, but no, I that's what I'm interested to see is what pick you what pick you most interested in and seeing the future of, you know, it could be outside the top ten. No, there's a lot of picks.
SPEAKER_00Uh I'm most interested in is Caleb Wilson because a simple fact, I feel like the way that everybody talked to us, there was a top three. You know, it was Caleb Wilson. You know, it was a bunch of guards. And it's like Caleb Wilson. And then put him in a in the group with the guards, but he wasn't in the group with the top three. And I feel like in his hand, in my mind as well, he deserved to be in that conversation. So I think he's gonna play with a chip on the shoulder. And I think Chicago I think Chicago is gonna benefit from him playing with a chip on his shoulder. He did get injured in North Carolina, so he is gonna, you know, he gotta come back from the injury and then he gotta work on his jump shot. But I think they got they got one in Chicago because he got the chip on the shoulder. Damn.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Just because he's gonna have the most opportunities, probably.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_00That's exactly why.
SPEAKER_01Playing with Randall. He's gonna be able to get some.
SPEAKER_02You know, he's gonna shoot that thing.
SPEAKER_01I forgot about MPJ.
SPEAKER_00But no, he's gonna shoot that thing. Randall and board, he he's gonna be able to, he's gonna be able to average a double-double because of the simple fact. He got them two to get the buckets, and then he could get his own shots too. I think he's gonna I think he's gonna win rookie of the year.
SPEAKER_02All right. I'm not I'm not against it. I actually might might go to FanDuel and throw a little money on that while while I'm at it. But uh the pick that I'm not most interested in, but I feel like could have a nice effect, not just on uh their roster, but just you know just the play on the field is OKC drafted a day Mara, number 12, 7-3 guy. You know, you know they had to get somebody else to bang with Wimby. That was the biggest thing they had to get somebody with Wimby. But I am interested in seeing what that does with Hartenstein. Do they keep him? Do they, is he just gonna go back to be a free agent? Because if he's a free agent, and I'm San Antonio, I'm immediately calling that phone. Like, hey, you trying to back up this when you try to back up Wimby and get some get back for the team that lets you go immediately, but I think that's gonna have a lasting impact, just not just on okay, she's rostered, but the play on the field, because now they got a seven, two, seven, three guys that can bang with Wimby. I know Wimby's great and all, but going up against two seven, seven, two, seven, three guys in a whole seven-game series might be tough. Okay, see, might, you know, maybe they got to themselves a Wimby stopped, but I'd be interested. But outside of that, I'll get I'm I'm excited for Michael Brown Jr., seeing what he does. Uh, the rest of the draft, we'll see some of these run. It's gonna be a star somewhere that we didn't know about. So I'm excited.
SPEAKER_00I think uh San Antonio, we kept talking about how they needed a power forward. They got uh yeah, out of UK. They got them, they got them a big body that could play power forward that he could get down there and bang with so Wendy had some help. So I think that was a good pick for him. Uh Noah P went uh I think 20, 29th, or 30th, might have been 30th. 30th. 30th, yeah, 30th, uh, out of Arizona.
SPEAKER_02To the Suns.
SPEAKER_00I feel like because he when he played by college by Arizona, I think that's gonna be a good pick for the Suns. I watched him a lot this uh this past season. I think that's gonna he went a little lower than I thought he would, but I think he's gonna be something special.
SPEAKER_02Uh uh I am very excited. Uh summer league, we you know, me and Q. And if DQ wants to stop by, we'll be talking about some leagues, see what these players is looking like. But we got one more thing to talk
World Cup On US Soil Reactions
SPEAKER_02about. We probably should have been talking about a little bit more. Our apologies, but you know, the World Cup has been going out. It's just been the group stages. Just been the group stages. We've been kind of waiting for the bracket side of the tournament to come around. And it looks like it's about to here in a little couple more days. But Q, you know, you watched a game or two of the World Cup. How are you feeling about you know World Cup's on American soil? Have you been feeling the atmosphere? Have you been excited about it? Has it changed your mind about soccer or what they call it football?
SPEAKER_00Has it changed my mind, honestly? A little bit. The uh the local team, the Louisville FC, they got a game, uh, international friendly versus Trinity Dad and Tobago. I said, all right, I'm gonna go to this because yeah, they got it, they got that. So I'm gonna go to that because you know, international friendlies watch the World Cup. Maybe we want to see how these countries play against one another. Um I just got done watching Brazil. Yeah, it's gonna it's gonna look tight for everybody. I know Messi, I know, I know Dion, I know you watched the Messi game. I just watched this Brazil game. It was it felt like they was at the toy in Washington. And then Neymar, you know, he's coming back from the injury. They got him coming off the bench. And if he can round into form, especially going down later into the group stages, it might get ugly for some people for Brazil. I am so listening to the different podcasts and stuff, and was concerned about the roster, the buildup of the uh United States team. And from the games I watched, imagine I don't know that much about soccer. We looked at what I saw. I don't know, I could be wrong, you feel me? But I did notice we went up, I can't think of the team we played, but we went up two to zero, we went up two zero. I'm straight. We went up two zero in the first half in the first half. And then it's like that was the end of the game. We didn't score no more points, it just kind of felt like we was playing around the clock. It's like we we just gonna keep passing the balls to each other, and we ain't gonna try to score more. And I know in the group stage situation, kind of need to score, so I didn't understand that. But again, I don't know none of that stuff. I'm that's just something I know. It's as a casual, as a very, very low casual on the top.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I mean, I I remember I I watched the USA against uh Australia. Uh we won that War 2-0. We moved on to first time going 2-0 in the group stage in like a very long time, apparently. Uh I'm looking forward to the bracket stage. But I had to watch Messi. I tried to watch the Cristinal Renato game. I couldn't catch it at the time, but I wanted to watch some greatness. But hey, World Cup, it is exciting. These fans is going crazy. I wish we were in more of a city that was hosting one of these games. Because man, it looks exciting.
SPEAKER_00And they sold out, they sold out Auburn Stadium for uh like a friendly. Like my team's warm up, warming up. 70,000 people down at Auburn football stadium? The atmosphere is you see it on TV, like the country is in love with soccer right now. Like that when we was playing out stream, they kept cutting in Kansas City. And I'm like, man, people just sitting outside watching the games. Same thing in Boston, in Texas. Like, people's really into the World Cup. This is a big event. And like you said, once we get more down to the group uh elimination like stages or whatnot, we're gonna get more into it. But yeah, man, this is this is a big deal. I I mean I ain't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, DK DQ, you've been watching the World Cup, or you know, what would you just be?
SPEAKER_01So I I have not tuned in. I'm not really a uh a football guy, but I have been watching the fans. So I traveled to Bucky's, I got to see a bunch of different people, and I sat there and people watched for a minute, you know, different people in their different jerseys. Uh I came through Atlanta, they had uh it was Spain versus Saudi Arabia, and uh I saw some Spaniards that were very happy. I saw some Saudis and they were not.
SPEAKER_02Well, hey, well, me and Q we're gonna talk about a little bit more. We might even get a soccer guy on the pod as we get through more of the World Cup, but that'll do it for another episode of from our perspective.
Draft Night Breaking News And Wrap
SPEAKER_02But I do have some breaking news that happened in the second round of the NBA draft is happening currently as the pod is going on. Uh the OKC Thunder drafted at number 37 Ryan Conwell. But not they didn't just draft him. Moments later, they traded him to the Miami Heat for the number for the number 41 overall pick and some money. Because you know, uh OKC they ain't got a lot, they ain't got a lot of space on their rocks. So Ryan Conwell, former U of L Cardinals going to the Miami Heat. Hey, I'm about to start being a uh a hardcore Miami Heat fan. You know, I was a pseudo Heat fan. I might have to start being a hardcore Heat fan this upcoming season. They might be good this year. But thank you guys for joining us for another episode from my perspective. Go ahead, like, go ahead and subscribe. Leave a comment in the comment section. Let us know your thoughts on Dusty May going from Michigan to the Dallas Mavericks. Uh DQ, you got anything you want to say before you get out here besides uh talk about your New York Knicks?
SPEAKER_01I mean, that's it, man. Just in five, man. Knicks in five. You know the bads.
SPEAKER_02All right, Q, go ahead and send us all. Shout out Ryan Carwell.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man, Ryan Carwell, that's exactly what they need. Somebody that can create his own shot and get, and you know what I'm saying? And who can also shoot? That's a great, great pickup for Miami. I'm happy for that. Uh, but y'all know the guys is your boy, Mr. Bear. AKA said your name up on the spot. Might not which you would mind. We're gonna get you out on the next one. Y'all be easy, you know what I mean?
